What is Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration?

Our reverse osmosis water filtration is our most popular and effective system. It is chemical-free, ultra-effective, and more importantly, environmentally friendly. It works by putting contaminated water through a semipermeable membrane at a high rate of pressure, leaving behind any and all particles larger than water molecules. The semipermeable membrane filters contaminants at a molecular level, filtering out even the smallest of particles. As pressurized water moves through the semipermeable membrane, only the filtered water gets through, leaving behind 99% of all contaminants.

Contaminants Removed

Here are some of the many contaminants removed by a reverse osmosis water filtration system:

  • Salts
  • Minerals
  • Bacteria
  • Chemicals
  • Microorganisms
  • Sediment
  • Heavy Metals
  • Organic Compounds
  • Fluoride
  • Chlorine
  • Arsenic
  • VOCs
  • PFAs
  • Microplastics
  • Herbicides
  • Pesticides

How Does Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Work?

A reverse osmosis water filtration system works by utilizing pressure to force water molecules to go through a semipermeable membrane, which then removes pollutants, leaving you with clean drinking water.

Stage 1: Pre-Treatment

The pre-treatment stage starts with pre-filters, which remove larger particles such as sediments, chlorine, and organic matter. This is done so the RO membrane is not damaged or compromised. This step of the process also properly treats water, ensuring a smooth process throughout the later stages.

Stage 2: Reverse Osmosis Filtration

In this stage, water is highly pressurized, ensuring it is pushed through the semipermeable membrane. The semipermeable membrane is a critical system component that features small pores (0.0001 microns) which allow for just water to pass through, in turn blocking salts, chemicals, and microorganisms from entering. The now purified water is then stored in a tank for later use.

Stage 3: Disposal of Wastewater

The leftover contaminants which cannot pass through the semipermeable membrane, are then removed as wastewater. This is done via a flow restrictor and a drain system that controls the flow of water through the membrane, ensuring system efficiency. This process usually brings about 3-4 gallons of wastewater per every gallon of purified water.

Stage 4: Water Storage and Delivery Process

Filtered water is then stored in your water tank for later use. Whenever there is a need for water, it will be delivered straight to your faucet, allowing you to utilize the cleanest and safest drinking water possible. A reverse osmosis water filtration system allows you to enjoy clean water free of up to 99% of contaminants whenever you desire.

Stage 5: Post-Treatment

Before reaching your faucet, water travels from the storage tank and passes through a post-filter that uses carbon to remove any lingering tastes from your water.

Typically though, the average cost is somewhere between $1,000 to $4,000 with the median price falling right around $2,500. Read on for a more comprehensive breakdown.

A countertop reverse osmosis system is a budget-friendly option for those wanting clean and filtered water without the steep costs associated with other systems. Under the Sink System

An under the sink system is installed underneath one’s kitchen sink, and provides clean drinking water at an affordable price. These systems vary in pricing depending on the stages, quality, and complexity of the system. Usually though, one can expect to pay between $200 to $600.

Whole House System

A whole house reverse osmosis water filtration is the most expensive and complex system available. Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most common questions asked about reverse osmosis water filtration systems:

Is Reverse Osmosis Water Bad for You?

Although RO water is low on minerals like calcium and magnesium, RO water is NOT bad for you. Low mineral content can be counteracted through a remineralization filter or by adding trace mineral drops to your water.

Is Reverse Osmosis Water the Same as Distilled Water?

RO water and distilled water are not the same. While they are both purified, the difference is that distilled water strips the water of almost all of its minerals, while a reverse osmosis filtration system may leave behind some minerals, depending on the system being used.

Does Reverse Osmosis Soften Water?

The answer is, a reverse osmosis system softens water through its removal of minerals.
